Brooke no argument

I haven’t mentioned how ridiculous Tom Cruise is for at least a week, and I’m sorry for that. I’ve been remiss. He would be happy to know that the Scientologists have taken over YouTube, foisting their ridiculous “press” conferences and “objective” speeches onto video’s newest frontier. I’ve been debating whether I should post their videos, but I’d never want to promulgate their point of view, which is “anti-psychiatry” and pro-alien.
In order to counter the hype surrounding the second version of Mission Impossible (which is doing poorly at the box office, thank God), I’ve been reading Brooke Shields’ book on her experience with postpartum depression, Down Came the Rain. And you know what? It’s pretty good. I mean, Shields isn’t a great stylist, but the simplicity of her writing serves her purpose well. Her evocation of the blackness of depression, the hopelessness of it, is some of the best writing I’ve seen on the subject—precisely because she’s not fancying it up. It’s accessible, and that’s what makes it powerful. I’m halfway through, but I’d recommend it for any woman who’s struggled with postpartum depression.
This image, BTW, is of another of Shields’ books. I have a feeling this one isn’t as empowering, though.
