I’m upset about this Don Imus thing.
I think Imus should be fired, and it’s bizarre that people are arguing otherwise. What if he’d said something similar about Jewish people? He’d be out on his ass. After years marked by similar remarks, what the hell are we waiting for? Why are we giving racists the benefit of the doubt? What does that say about our society, that we’re reluctant to take a stand against racism? Don Imus should be ostracized, and shouldn’t be hanging out with Al Sharpton. Sharpton shouldn’t be in the business of educating white people when they say offensive things. Because what kind of moron needs that kind of education in the 21st century? A racist moron.
We need to have a no tolerance policy. Imus needs to be fired. Period.

He really isn’t racist. His comments do not speak to any sort of racial heirarchy or inferiority. He may be sexist, offensive and certainly not p.c., but racist is a stretch. I just don’t think he knows any better. It reminds me of when one of the girls on “The Real World” referred to black people as “colored” right in front of them. She didn’t have any idea that it was taboo, but calling her racist would be incorrect.
An intersting commentary on Imus in particular and mainstream media’s support of hate radio in general:

Remember that Imus described Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post, his frequent guest, as a “boner-nosed, beanie-wearing Jewboy.”
Ugh.
