There Was a Roach in My Sandwich at La Lupe!

Aug 25 2008 | Comments 13

me.jpg

This photo is from Saturday. You can see by my face that I’m a little disturbed. That’s because I opened my Milaneza con Pollo sandwich (after eating most of it) and discovered a roach. Oh my god.

Like any good neurotic, I have a few phobias. Claustrophobia and emetophobia are the most serious of them. But I also have an issue with roaches because my hallucinations and vivid dreams are frequently roach-filled. Having a roach in my sandwich prompted much anxiety, I can tell you. Plus, how did I know it was the only one? I’d already eaten most of the sandwich.

The restaurant decided not to charge me for the sandwich. Wise decision. But they still charged us for the tacos and our beverages. Really? And no one apologized other than our waitress. Shouldn’t an owner or a cook have come to chat?

I was wondering just how egregious this was, so I asked Brian McManus, who was a chef for many years before making that inevitable leap to music writer. Now he’s PW’s music editor (you can see his handiwork here). He said it’s just about the most egregious thing that can happen to a patron at a restaurant. “What could be worse?” he asked. “A shmear of feces? A dead mouse in your sandwich?” I guess he’s right. A dead roach is way up there in grossness.

This photo is of the banners proclaiming the restaurant’s delicious food. I notice they don’t mention roaches.

Who’s Worth More: Person or Elephant?

Aug 22 2008 | Comments 2

This is the question so eloquently emobied in an email to me from a TTWS reader (who I think wants to remain anonymous on this one, but I’m not sure) who pointed me to a NYT story about a depressed and anxious elephant named Jenny.

The reader says:

I thought this NY Times story interesting given the lack of concern so frequently evidenced for people in psychiatric hospitals. We can only hope that the public outcry which resulted in respect and care for this noble creature will one day be extended to all humans in our nation’s psychiatric hospitals.

Here here.

Perhaps it’s because Tinsel the hamster wasn’t hi-res enough when he originally appeared on CuteOverload.com. It certainly can’t be he wasn’t qte enough for the new C.O. calendar.

I am so furious. From Furious Seasons:

Former Head Of Abusive NJ State Hospital Now In Charge Of Investigating Abuses At All NJ State Hospitals

Stories like these only seem to exist in government bureaucracy and especially in the corrupt state of New Jersey:

“The former chief executive at a New Jersey state psychiatric hospital troubled by escapes, a suicide and homicide has a different state job investigating those kinds of problems at all five state hospitals.

“This week, LaTanya Wood-El took charge of psychiatric hospital investigations for the state Human Services Department.

“She was removed last December from a job as chief executive officer at the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital, which officials said lacked routine procedures for tracking, reporting and preventing violence.

“State Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini, a Monmouth County Republican, told the Asbury Park Press that the new post is ‘outrageous.’

“But Human Services officials said she’s qualified for the job.”

Qualified by dint of being a complete fuck-up? How the hell does someone get pulled from a responsibility they clearly couldn’t handle at one hospital and then get put in charge of overseeing investigations of all the hospitals? This just boogles my pea brain. Hopefully, my NJ readers will write their local legislators.

As for Ancora, under Wood-El’s “leadership” patients were dying at the hospital and being abused. Why she wasn’t fired outright is beyond me.

I rarely agree with a Republican, but Mary Pat and I are thinking the same thing.

The Trouble With Spikol Print Edition: In Due Time

Aug 20 2008 | Comments 9

In Due Time

Biology sucks.

Years ago I met a guy, let’s call him Thomas, who was slender, had smooth brown skin, dark wavy hair and a beautiful smile. He was perfectly, androgynously exquisite. At least to me.

I mentioned my appreciation to a mutual friend, who was supposed to tell Thomas I was interested. I never heard anything after that, so I figured either Thomas wasn’t into it or my friend forgot to say anything.

Ever since, my conversations with Thomas—who I sometimes run into at parties—have been distinguished by my looking into his deep brown eyes to try to ascertain the truth. Is he looking at me with repulsion? With pity? With regret over missed opportunities?

It’s never clear. He always seems vaguely preoccupied. Sometimes I’m tempted to say, “Did Jon ever tell you I had a crush on you?” But it seems stupid now, years after the fact.

Cardiff research may help spell relief for thousands of bipolar sufferers

PEOPLE suffering from the mental illness bipolar disorder have been given fresh hope of new treatments by Cardiff scientists.

A research team at Cardiff University has found two genes associated with the illness.

It is hoped that the breakthrough discovery will pave the way to new treatments and end the stigma associated with the condition.

For more, go here. But beware: This article has yet another reference to Ben Stiller having bipolar disorder, which he does not. He actually said that as a (very dumb) joke a while ago, and the media jumped all over it.
